anya hindmarch

With the ban of the plastic bag in San Francisco we’ll be seeing a lot more canvas bags at the grocery store. Here’s a stylish option by Anya Hindmarch, who is better known for her gazillion dollar celeb-toting purses. This $10 canvas cotton bag will be available in the US in June (it’s already sold out in the UK). Sign up on her website to be notified of the US launch.

The Brooklyn based boyfriend/girlfriend team behind Hayden-Harnett make fabo to-die-for bags. They also make clothing, like these 60’s style babydoll dresses. I am so in love with their Beatrice bag (the brown floral) but it’s sold out, arrghhh! Go lust here: Hayden-Harnett.

My sister Haley just bought the cutest purse with little seahorses on it. Apparently its a Bungalow 360 which I had never heard of before but now I’m all over. They are priced just right for casual weekend bags ($30-40) with lots of cute patterns and practical styles. The owner Susie is a cat lover too, check out their fun Staff page.

marymo-laila.jpgmarymo-greteltote.jpg

MaryMo Handmade aka “accessories for girls who heart style” has some adorable bags and hair accessories. I love her fabric combo’s and great purse styles from the sweet Holly Golightly tote to the more sophisticated Laila Bag (bottom left). Get them before they sell out as they are each one-of-a-kind.

good morning, morning

Monday, February 12th, 2007

First of all I love the name of Lia Hoods website: Good Morning, Morning, it’s right up my alley in the cute name department and she uses vintage fabrics in bright colors which I generally find irresistible. Lia has a bunch of cute styles, like the bookbag tote and the gathered bag. Each item is one-of-a-kind which is cool, but a bummer if you fall in love with one and its sold out, so check carefully before ordering. The price is reasonable as well ($22-64).

purdy peony purses

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I was surfing as usual and stumbled upon these lovelies! The creation of two sisters Lindsey Iversen and Kristin Bradley aka Dylan & Dillion, all the fabric used in creating their suede handbags are silk screened from original hand carved relief prints and then professionally sewn in the United States, in case that’s important to you. They ain’t cheap $168-$350 but for something so pretty and unique I’d say it’s worth it.

bag whore

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

I realize I am becoming a bit obsessed with bags lately, there are just too many talented designers! Crystalyn Kae’s bags have cool shapes and she uses vintage fabrics which I am always a fan of. I love the little peek-a-boo fabric on her oversized Soiree Drawstring bag above and the pleats on her Troubadour Tote below. Another cool fact about her bags is that they are made of glazed upholstery-grade fabric and not leather, she actually calls them vegetarian bags! Prices range from $95.00 - $170.00.

white christmas

Tracey Tanner “Jann” $325.00

Kristen Aronsson “Plait” $325.00

South Moon Under “Deux Lux” $78.o0

This entry is for my friend Amanda Scott who has been in search of a white handbag. This was a trend that started a couple of years ago and like most new trends I was skeptical. That is until my mother-in-law gave me a white handbag with red trim and since it was a gift and therefore free I jumped on the white-bag-bandwagon. Now that I am a full fledged member I wanted to share some cute options for others who may be ready to join the party.
And because he is a fan of my blog I’d like to give a shout out to Amanda’s hubs Allen and his people at Another Planet Entertainment (APE is putting on the Gnarls Barkley/Flaming Lips show in SF tomorrow night, can’t wait!) and The Independent.

janine marie handbags

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Lil’ Wil’s been really busy in her other life so not alot of time to post these days. I don’t think I’m alone here when I say I can’t wait for 2007!

I hope these bags put a smile on your face as they did mine. Janine Marie is a local (Oakland) designer of these unique handmade bags. I am a big fan of variety and japanese pattern and the neat thing about the belted bag is that you can configure your own design. From her website you can choose the bag color and the kimono fabric and she has good color choices so you can choose a bag for any season. She makes belts and has other bag designs as well with prices ranging from $30-$170.

“bonus items”

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

corrina-chocolateduster2.jpgcorrina-tanduster.jpg

The Anna Corinna City Tote is smoking hot and way out of my price range therefore it shall be added to my “bonus items” list. This is the list that I create every year in anticipation of my December bonus. I put some in savings and then I treat myself and purchase one item I have coveted all year. The problem is the list has grown very large this year. So far I have this bag, a pair of Alberto Fermani boots, a new Jonathan Adler piece, plus practical items such as new patio doors for our house and a new coffee table to replace my BusVans for Bargains-early-20’s-first-apartment coffee table. The hubs jokes that the bonus gets bigger and bigger in my imagination every year.

As my Mom would say “How stinkin’ cute are these bags!?”. They appeal to my love of vintage fabrics , vintage shapes and their hippy-prep style (or at least that’s what I call it). Made by designer Meleana who was born and raised in Hawaii she uses fabrics found throughout Hawaii, the States and her families collection. You can find them on her website where you can view other fabric choices or on the adorable website Nest.

thickskin

More bags!! I love the distressed leather of these bags by Thickskin, aptly named the “Rockstar” probably because only a rockstar could afford them. This silver clutch is smoking and $385!

clutches

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

The clutch is making a comeback, or maybe it was back and I just caught on, anyway its my obsesssion of the day and a great way to introduce you to my friend Natalie’s line of purses called Lychee Line. I totally dig her new pinstripe clutch, perfect for going right from work to happy hour, fashionably.

My other obsession has become Whiting & Davis purses on ebay (thanks for the tip Leah). My Mom bought me one when she decided I should have an antique purse collection and I thought that was just another crazy Penny idea but I have grown to love them and now of course I want more! Thankfully ebay has tons and they are very reasonably priced. Their trademark is the mesh design and the deco style.

more bags

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I have been worshipping these bags by Rebe for years but have never gotten around to buying one, maybe this will be the year. They are soooo colorful, I love the patchwork style and each one is perfectly unique. She also makes adorable clothes.

queen bee

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I love supporting independent designers and Queen Bee Creations is a group of very creative folks making very hip bags up in Portland, Oregon. I bought a version of the poppy tote bag about 2 years ago and it still looks brand new. The prices are super reasonable and the bag is really well made. My friend Kristen has the one on the left and its got really cool pockets on the inside too.

Check out the BuyOlympia website for other independent, handmade funkiness.
